Handwritten history of the Gordexola Battalion of the PNV
The "Gordexola" battalion belonging to the Eusko Gudarostea of the PNV was formed in November 1936, based on 750 gudaris from the companies "Elguezabal", "Garaizabal", "Horn", "Mentxaka", and "Eguia", commanded, respectively. , by captains Luis Urcullu, Eustasio de Arrien, Gimeno, Franco, and Mariano Torrontegui. The first commander was Enrique de Iza, and the Mayor Lequerica.
The initial nucleus of the "Elguezabal" was formed in August 36. These men were instructed in the Schools of the Bilbao Board of Trustees. Apparently, it was the first nationalist company to go to the front, leaving for San Sebastián on August 25, standing out in public order missions.
At the beginning of September the company was ordered to return to Bilbao without participating in any combat. From here it went to the Motrico front, where it fought in September until it retired. In these combats the "Elguezabal" had its first casualties, including three deaths.
This is its history until its surrender in Baracaldo, described by its commander Enrique Iza who tells us the history of the battalion and the first vicissitudes of the “Elguezabal” company, including the nominal list of its first components. The story is completed by the memory of its mayor, Víctor Uriarte, describing the entire campaign and its acts of arms, as well as the environment and life of the unit.
